The history of coffee in Italy is inextricably linked to Friuli Venezia Giulia, Trieste is in fact the capital of coffee in Italy and its recognition is the result of centuries of tradition and innovation which have revolutionized the way of drinking coffee throughout the world.
It starts from 1700 when the first ships loaded with coffee from Ethiopia and Yemen began to arrive, and then exploded with the establishment of the free port of Trieste. The innovation of Trieste's master roasters in the 19th century, with the introduction of the coffee blend, further consolidated the city's central role in the coffee trade.
The coffee culture spread rapidly, influencing both aristocracy and bourgeoisie, and giving rise to numerous historic cafés, such as Caffè Tommaseo and Caffè degli Specchi. These places have become centers of social and cultural life , frequented by writers of the caliber of Svevo and Joyce, surviving wars and economic crises.
