Gubane and Strucchi

Gubane and Strucchi

The holiday dessert

Gubana is the typical dessert of Friuli Venezia Giulia , originating from the Natisone Valleys near Cividale .

It has always been a festive dessert, given the richness of its contents, it was once prepared only on special occasions, now it is an unmissable dessert at the end of a meal. The filling of the gubana is made of walnuts , hazelnuts, raisins, pine nuts , almonds, amaretto and flavored with grappa or Slivoviz (traditional plum distillate).

Gubana is similar to a strudel but rolled up, the filling is placed on the dough and everything is shaped into the characteristic snail shape. After leavening, the cake is baked in the oven.

Strucchi are the "biscuit" version of gubana, traditionally they are called " Friulian sugared almonds " because they were used in place of sugared almonds during weddings.
