Montasio is a typical cheese from Friuli Venezia Giulia , with a semi-hard cooked texture, with a characteristic delicate and balanced flavour.

Montasio is a naturally lactose-free cheese, produced exclusively with Pezzata Rossa Friulana milk and can be found in 4 different types based on maturation: fresh (2-4 months), mezzano (5-10 months), matured (10 months). -18 months) and very old (over 18 months).


This cheese has been protected by the Montasio Consortium since 1984 at the behest of the producers themselves, it has been a PDO Protected Designation of Origin since 1996.

Montasio must comply with requirements to guarantee its authenticity: it can only be produced in the provinces of Friuli Venezia Giulia and in the neighboring provinces of Eastern Veneto; the milk is processed raw or thermised, never pasteurized ; the characteristic writing “Montasio” imprinted on the newly produced wheels certifies their origin and proves compliance with the production specifications.
